Subpoenas Served to Kountze ISD Board

Posted: Updated:

Subpoenas have been served to Kountze ISD administrators in connection with the religious banner controversy.

The subpoenas were served to Superintendent Kevin Weldon and all 7 board members to testify at a hearing next Thursday.

That's the word from the cheerleaders lead counsel, David Starnes.

The suit against the school district regarding religious banners is also an agenda item for discussion at this Monday's Kountze ISD meeting.

Friday night, the banners with biblical references were back as Kountze played Hardin.

The sign could be used after a judge issued a two-week temporary restraining order of a "banner ban" imposed by the school board.

Friday's run- through sign read "If God is for us, who can be against us?"

Fans were up on their feet Friday cheering on the cheerleaders for standing up for their faith.

Fan Pamela Gandy says the fans at the game were there to stand up for what they believe in as a community.

Gandy said the signs are a simple message and that the cheerleaders didn't think the publicity would balloon like it did.

Cheerleader MaKayla Lewis told 12 News HD that the squad does not want to take any negative action.

Lewis said the squad loves the school board and they hope to settle the issue in the most positive way.
