Public cheers for Kountze cheerleaders

Posted: Updated:

Nearly 100 people attended a "Wide Awake Rally" Wednesday night in support of the Kountze ISD cheerleaders who were recently told they could not display religious banners at football games.

Over Everest Ministry put on the rally to encourage the cheerleaders for standing up for their beliefs.

The Kountze ISD superintendent banned the cheerleaders from using religious messages on run-through signs at football games.  A two-week temporary restraining order has been issued to allow cheerleaders to continue using the banners, for now.

Wednesday, supporters rallied around the girls at the Great lawn of the Beaumont Event Centre.

Thursday, a Plano-based Christian advocacy organization called the "Liberty Institute" will start a petition drive to encourage Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to support the cause of the cheerleaders.

They petition can be found at LibertyInstitute.org, beginning Thursday.
