Volleyball drops 3-1 decision to Nicholls
Whittaker racks up 18 kills in loss
THIBODAUX, La. – It was a banner evening for Sierra Whittaker on offense, but unfortunately her match-leading 18 kills went for naught as the Lamar volleyball team fell 3-1 (22-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-27) to Nicholls at Stopher Gym in the Southland Conference opener.
Whittaker was also remarkably efficient in the attack, hitting .400 and adding in a service ace.
Alex Morford added in nine kills and hit at a .600 rate to go along with 41 assists and 10 digs to narrowly miss out on the first Lamar triple-double of the season. Cortney Moore also had nine kills at a .304 clip.
As a team, LU (8-7, 0-1 SLC) outhit the Colonels .248 to .231.
Erika Rojas led the way for the Lady Cards defensively with 17 digs, and Megan Schwartz tallied another double-digit dig outing with 13 and had a strong night behind the service line with four aces.
After Nicholls (4-6, 1-0 SLC) pulled out a pair of 25-22 victories in the opening two sets, the Lady Cards came out of the break on fire, hitting .484 and getting five kills on just seven swings from Rebekah Rightnour to secure a 25-18 win.
The fourth set would prove to be the most dramatic, but the Colonels were able to hold on late for the 27-25 decision. The frame saw 15 ties and seven lead changes, but Nicholls was able to rebound from a string of errors to take a late 21-20 lead. Whittaker put up her final kill of the match to bring LU back even at 23-23, but three Sarah Terry kills down the stretch secured the Colonels' first victory over Lamar since the 2010 season.
The Lady Cards will attempt to get back on track on Saturday when they close out the road swing with a match against Southeastern Louisiana.
