Lumberton stadium renovations delayed

Posted: Updated:

The Lumberton Raiders will be missing out on that home turf advantage at their football game tonight as their stadium is still being renovated.

After about seven months of construction Raiders Stadium and field house are still being renovated.

The Lumberton ISD Superintendent, John Valastro, says the 34-year-old bleachers were in much need of an upgrade.

"They were aging, they were deteriorating, the press box was made of wood and it was rotten," said Valastro.

For about 20 years the home team fans have been sitting on the east side of the field, facing the setting sun during football and soccer games.

"The people in the stands are going to be really excited because they'll be sitting away from the sun," said Valastro.

"We're going to be the ones on the comfortable side," said head football coach Alvin Credeur.

Even though his first home game has been moved to Barbers Hill Credeur says the renovations to his stadium are worth losing the home team advantage tonight.

"Gonna be nice to have new things and makes the kids feel good, makes the kids feel like they're cared about," said Credeur.

At their game day breakfast Lumberton raiders are excited about their new stadium and say it's worth the wait.

"We're really excited, hoping it all gets done in time and just ready to play here so we're all looking forward to next Friday," said football player Ryan Lovell.

Even though the construction projects are about 5 weeks behind schedule the stadium will be ready to house their thousands of fans just one week from now on September 14th.

The new Raider's Stadium cost almost $700,000 and will be all set for the first game the Raiders will actually play at home against the Silsbee Tigers on September 14th.

The 1.2 million dollar new field house should be complete in October.
