Red Cross attracts volunteers from near and far

Posted: Updated:

If you have a desire to help people in need, you're in luck. Sharon Tyler from the American Red Cross says local chapters could always use more volunteers. Volunteerng for the Red Cross is a great way to help those affected by Hurricane Isaac.

Aimee Mankins, a volunteer from California, explains the feeling she gets when she helps those in need: "There's that instant gratification when you're helping somebody and you know they're in a bad situation and you're there, and they know that you care about them."

It's also a great way to meet people from all over the country. Out of the 400 volunteers stationed at the North Orange Baptist Church this morning...we met a retired nurse from Seattle...

"I wanted to continue nursing in some way and this is a great way to do just that," she said.

A funeral home worker from Houston...

"It's a nice getaway from the funeral home business," he joked.

And a couple young college grads from California, who met each other after getting off their plane in Houston.

All these people from diverse backgrounds have been brought together by a common bond: love and compassion for their neighbor.

"When a catastrophe hits like this, somebody's gotta go...at the time they can't help themselves!" says retired Army technician and fellow volunteer Gene Hardemon.

Wise words...from a volunteer hoping to inspire others.

If you're inspired and want to get involved, the Red Cross encourages you to visit their chapters in Beaumont and Orange. To find out more, you can visit their website at www.redcross.org/tx.
