Project cracks down on predators

Posted: Updated:

In two weeks, Southeast Texas has seen four guilty pleas to child pornography charges. It may seem like more sex offenders popping up...or are police just doing a better job finding them? Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District Mandy Griffith thinks it's probably a little bit of both.

"I think it's potentially a problem everywhere, which is why the Eastern District is trying to help lead the charge to prosecute these individuals," she said.

Griffith is the local coordinator for the national initiative called project safe childhood. The project was launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice and partners with local, state and federal law enforcement in an increased effort to crack down on child predators. Griffith says the initiative is a big help since sex crimes have increased dramatically since the advent of the internet.

She expressed, "The conversation that needs to be had with parents and anyone who has kids is talk with them about what they're doing on the internet".

Griffith also offered tips that include keeping computers in common areas of the house, never disclosing personal information to strangers such as an address or phone number, and never sharing files or clicking links from strangers.
