A community in Groves is shaken after a late night shooting. Neighbors are on edge.
"Didn't ever expect for this to happen, right here next door," said Dustin Wilson who lives behind the home where the shooting took place.
Residents of the 3100 block of Cleveland Avenue in Groves are shocked to hear someone was killed in their neighborhood.
"Didn't hear anything, no sirens, no nothing. No gun shots," said Wilson.
Investigators say 26-year-old Cody Charles Hokett was shot in the chest with a shotgun around 9:45 p.m. Monday. He later died at the hospital.
The man who found the victim didn't want to speak on camera but he did tell us what happened.
A neighbor from around the corner was walking down the street when he saw a man slumped over in the open doorway of this home clutching his chest.
The neighbor applied pressure to the gun shot wound trying to keep him calm and that's when the man described his shooter.
"The victim was still conscious and able to speak whenever the witness and officers talked to him," said Groves City Marshal Jeff Wilmore.
After about a six-hour search for the shooting suspect 25-year-old john mason Broadway, who lives at the residence where the shooting took place, was found in Beaumont.
"I didn't think he would do something like that," said Wilson.
A community is left with more questions than answers as some neighbors, like Dustin Wilson, say the suspected gunman seemed like a good guy.
"He was easy going," said Wilson remembering his encounters with Broadway. "We didn't hang out on a regular basis but when we talked he seemed to be easy going and just a cool guy."
Now Wilson says he is going to be more cautious when getting to know his neighbors.
John mason Broadway has been charged with murder and could face up to 99 years in prison.
Broadway is being held in the Jefferson County jail and will be arraigned tomorrow morning.
Groves police say Broadway did indicate that he was the shooter. Investigators are still trying to determine a motive.
