Tea Party in Beaumont

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of Southeast Texans gathered Thursday night at the Rogers Park community building to discuss -- and ask questions about "Obamacare," reforms of health care recently found constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.

State Representative James White was joined by business people, a doctor and others who were against the reforms.

The town hall meeting was sponsored by the Southeast Texas Tea Party.

Representative White argued that Obamacare is a quote "game changer" for America, and said Southeast Texans must vigorously support a repeal of the law.

The owner of a series of Southeast Texas Papa Johns pizza restaurants said Obamacare would cost her business between $20,000 and $30,000 more a year in taxes.

Judy Nichols says she has dumped expansion projects that would have added dozens of jobs because Obamacare insurance costs would be prohibitive to her business and other small businesses.

Port Arthur primary care physician Dr. Tracie Updike said while specifics are unclear, she honestly expects Obamacare to dramatically increase wait times, and drive many doctors out of business.

12 News HD anchor Kevin Steele emceed the town hall meeting.
