Cancer patient hopes for medical miracle

Posted: Updated:

A Bridge City family used to overcoming struggle is now faced with another hurdle. The Puente family, who we first talked to three years ago after their first miracle, has faith modern medicine and family support will get them another miracle.

Friends and family of Jesus Puente say he's never asked for anything so now it's time they do the asking for him.

"When the doctor told me I had stage four berkus lymphoma I just went blank. I went blank. I don't remember nothing after that," said Jesus Puente Monday evening as friends and family were preparing for his fundraiser this weekend.

Puente was diagnosed with stage four berkus lymphoma in March but the news affected more people than just his wife and two little girls.

"For some one like Jesus that is just an amazing person to find out something like that it just you know, it hurts," said Puente family friend Charity Cavazos.

It's not the first time the Puente's have had to work for a miracle. When Hurricane Ike rolled through Southeast Texas four years ago it took everything they had but left them with a miracle that took 12 years to conceive.

Jesus and Christina's 3-year-old daughter Bella packs a powerful punch in her dad's battle.

"If this chemo regimen doesn't work then her stem cells that we banked three years ago could save his life," said Christina Puente.

Jesus is at his second round of chemotherapy in Houston so he won't be at the benefit friends and family organized to support his treatment.

"It's going to be very hard for me not to be there but I'll be there one way or another because my family's gonna be here, my daughters, and my wife will be here," said Jesus.

So even if you've never met the Puente's it's not hard to join the team.

If you'd like to help the benefit is this Saturday at the United Steelworkers union hall number 13-228 at 1609 Port Neches Avenue from 11 a.m. till 8 p.m. There will be barbecue dinners, a bake sale, raffle, silent auction, and kids activities.
