YYAFA reaches out to youth during summer

Posted: Updated:

The Youth Young Adult Fellowship Alliance was started 20 years ago by Mark Smith in Silsbee when he saw a need and his work continues to help more and more kids.

"I have a heart for children. I have children of my own and basically I can't stand to see children suffer," said Smith Friday afternoon.

Smith recently decided to shift his focus from Hardin county children to youth ages one through 18 in Beaumont by taking over the Solid Rock Community Church and opening a new community youth center on Pine Burr Boulevard with two additional weekday breakfast and lunch feeding sites at the Harmony Missionary Baptist Church on Magnolia and Greater Grace Temple on Saint James.

The youth center offers meals, sports, arts and crafts, and games. Parents who wish to have their kids attend have to go to the center to register.

Cost is one hundred fifty dollars for the 10 week summer program but Smith says they will not turn away people who can't afford it.

Aside from providing a cool place to play during the summer, Smith has another focus.

"Street corners, unsupervised parks become a haven for drug trafficking for mischief and here kids can be in a good, clean, Christian environment and eat a nourishing breakfast and lunch," said Smith.

The YYAFA is supported by the Southeast Texas Food Bank, The Reaud Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture but always appreciates tax deductible donations from the community.
