Troopers find over 1,000 pounds of pot

Posted: Updated:

A spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety says over 1,000 pounds of marijuana, which left Houston and was bound for North Carolina, was found hidden in a secret compartment in a U-Haul style box truck on Monday morning.

According to DPS, the truck was stopped about 7:30 a.m. on U.S. Highway 190 West four miles east of Jasper, for a safety belt violation.

A Jasper Police K-9 was requested to the scene. The dog alerted officials to the possibility of drugs in the truck.

The truck was taken to the Highway Patrol Office in Jasper where it was searched and officers found about 95 bundles of tightly wrapped marijuana. The bundles have been transported to the Houston Crime Lab for further testing.

Both men in the truck were arrested. Authorities believe both are from Honduras.

One of the men has been identified while the other is believed to be a sex offender from New Jersey. Officials say their identities will be released until after they have been arraigned.

Immigration Custom Enforcement, or ICE, has been notified and placed a hold on both.

Both men are being held in the Jasper County Jail.
