A Beaumont Police Department spokesperson tells 12News HD a man has been arrested following a Sunday-morning accident that sent two people to the hospital with severe injuries.

The accident happened just before 3 a.m. in the 1700 block of Cardinal Drive near South Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.

Police say a man and woman were on a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle heading southbound on Cardinal Drive.  The driver of a 2003 Honda Accord traveling behind the cycle struck it causing the driver of the cycle to lose control. The motorcycle went down and traveled about a ¼ of a mile before coming to a rest on the inside shoulder next to the wire barrier.

The man and woman from the motorcycle were taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont.  A News Release issued Sunday afternoon by the Beaumont Police Department says they were not wearing helmets and both received severe head trauma.

As of Sunday evening; the man is in critical condition and the woman is in stable condition.

The driver of the Honda, identified by police as Robert A. Pastorella, Jr, 44, of Port Arthur, was arrested and charged with intoxication assault.
