Port Arthur Police officers are investigating a homicide and say the victim's nephew is a key suspect in the case.
Police officers at a house located at 2213 Shirley St. told a 12News HD photographer they were asked to check on the welfare of a woman who lived in the house around 2:45 p.m. Friday. Family members, who identify the woman as Bettye Davis, 70, of Port Arthur, contacted the police because they said they could not get inside the house.
Officers said they found Davis' body inside the home. They say it appears she had been deceased for days. They also said Davis' Toyota Camry is missing.
Port Arthur Police tell 12News HD that Davis' nephew was arrested in Harris County several days ago on unrelated drug charges while he was driving Davis' car.
Major Raymond Clark says they are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the car. He says they will get an arrest warrant to bring him back to Port Arthur.
Clark says Davis was a retired Port Arthur Independent School District employee.
