Beaumont Police Department news release

Posted: Updated:

On Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 11:21am, a 41 year old black male opened fire in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse. Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies and Beaumont Police Officers returned fire. The suspect fled in a pick up truck and it is unknown if at some point he was on foot during the initial shooting.

Officer's shots disabled the truck and the suspect abandoned it at Park and Milam. The suspect fled on foot and ran into a business located at 1110 Neches. The business was open and there were numerous employees inside. SWAT and Hostage negotiators responded  and were able to communicate with people inside the business. They were advised that the suspect had been shot and was worried about his injuries. Employees were able to get the suspect's gun and he was taken into custody by 12 noon.

A total of five people were shot during the incident, including the suspect. One person died at the scene from a gun shot wound and the others were transported to area hospitals.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is the lead agency and is being assisted by Beaumont Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers, FBI and ATF.

We are in the preliminary stages of the investigation and we ask for your patience as we gather evidence and release information without compromising the case.
