Times are tight. Many people nowadays have become pretty savvy at saving money, even for trips like spring break. College students are getting ready for a week of fun but some have found that can be pretty pricey. Not to mention sometimes unsafe.
Some Baylor students are factoring that into their spring break plans.
"I'm gonna go to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and go on a white water rafting trip," said Baylor Sophomore David Hornbeak.
Trips like that aren't cheap.
"It's a little more on the expensive side," says Hornbeak.
Another example: Round trip airfare from Dallas to the popular spring break destination of Cancun, Mexico will cost you almost $900.
We checked with local travel agents and here's the good news. They say the rates for airfare and hotels in Mexico have pretty much stayed the same over the past year. But that's still pretty penny for country that's on the U.S. travel warnings list. Think long and hard before traveling there.
"One of my friends, her parents got like a, they have a timeshare and so they got it for us," said Baylor Sophomore Christina Dunnigan.
Dunnigan is headed to Florida only because she can stay for free but a weeks stay in Miami can easily run up to $1,000 just for the hotel.
But other students are taking a completely different route.
"We're gonna go to Annenberg, Texas for a mission trip for our church," says Sophomore Donny Latorre.
They found that they can save money and help others in need. But if you would rather stick with trips like white water rafting, Hornbeak found that planning ahead helps.
"We saved up some money from this summer because we knew we wanted to fun for spring break," says Hornbeak.
Spring Break for Baylor University students officially begins on March 10th, 2012.
