An Orange county man is seeking help from the county in order to protect his family. Greg Frillou first heard bullets ricocheting off trees on his property 3 months after moving into his new home. His neighbor has heard them whiz past his head while he was mowing his lawn once.
Frillou even says his house was hit by a 50 caliber round. 50 calibers are typically used in the military for heavy automatic weapons or high powered sniper rifles. The bullets are armor piercing.
Frillou believes the bullets are coming from Southeast Texas Sports Club gun range. And now Frillou fears that one day, his wife or three boys may be hit next.
"They could be hit, there could be a fatality." Frillou said when asked what his biggest fear was.
Frillou has seeked help from County Commissioners and the Sheriff's office but they both say that nothing can be done.
Orange County Judge Carl Thiboeaux tells 12 News HD in a statement, "We do not have statutory power to regulate the gun range because of the size of the county."
This is because of a state law that prohibits counties from regulating gun ranges if the county in question has a population less than 150,000. Orange County currently has a population of 84,000.
The owner of the gun range did not want to comment on the situation.
An attorney advised Frillou to file a suit against the gun range but he doesn't believe it would accomplish anything. For now Frillou says he is stuck trying to find a solution for a question he may never be able to answer.
"I'm in limbo right now with my hands tied. I don't know what to do." Frillou said.
