School board discusses brawl, Superintendent

Posted: Updated:

Some hot items were on the agenda at Thursday's Beaumont Independent School District board meeting.

The main items on the B.I.S.D. board meeting agenda: the search for a new Superintendent and the Ozen High School and La Marque High School football brawl.

B.I.S.D. Athletic Director Rodney Saveat spoke to the board about the punishment players face for the fight that took place after a playoff game in Baytown in Nov.

The University Interscholastic League ruled that school officials didn't do enough to punish the athletes involved.

UIL put the Ozen team and Head Coach Jeff Nelson on a two year probation period.

If any future incident occurs, stiffer punishment will be enforced.

The search for a new Superintendent is starting since Dr. Carroll Thomas announced he will be retiring from his more than 15 year reign as Superintendent in Dec. 2012.

Board members had a chance to hear about the firms that could head the process.

School District Attorney Melody Chappell presented board members with a list of six firms that she interviewed to head the superintendent search.

Those six were The Executive Search Services for the Texas Associations of School Boards, The BWP and Associates, Region 5 Education Service Center, Dr. Bob Thompson and Associates, The School Executive Consulting Inc. And Advantage Staffing Resources.

Out of those three are available to handle the search. Those three were The Executive Search services for TASB, The BWP and Associates and the School Executive Consulting Inc.

Chappell says the others were involved in other searches.

The criteria Chappell told the board she took into account when interviewing the firms include ability, their past superintendent searches and their availability since board members told her they want to choose a new superintendent as soon as possible.

"I talked to them extensively about their availability, whether they were otherwise engaged in ongoing searches now," said Chappell. "I made that point to them that we did not want anyone to commit here if they're already extended out too far."

Board members didn't vote on which firm to use Thursday. They will have the opportunity to interview each consultant individually and make a decision after those interviews.
