MARSHALL (KYTX) -- A former Harrison County sheriff's deputy is facing a new round of child sex charges. Huey Edward Nichols, Jr. is now accused of sexually assaulting a third child. CBS 19's Abby Broyles has the latest on the investigation tonight.
This police affidavit shows new details in the ongoing investigation of 49-year old Eddie Nichols, a former Harrison County sheriff's deputy and Marshall police officer.
The report accuses Nichols of inappropriately touching a 15-year old girl. A counselor reported the touching happened multiple times from 2001 to 2002, when Nichols worked for the Marshall Police Department.
"The victim was reported to have run away from a local counselor's office and Mr. Nichols was one of the responding law enforcement officers," Texas Ranger Jason Dudley said.
Dudley says that's how Nichols met the girl. Nichols allegedly told the girl's grandmother he wanted to be a role model to the girl. She told investigators she was involved in a sexual relationship with Nichols for a year.
"During the course of that investigation I developed information that led to an arrest warrant issued for Mr. Nichols, a charge for indecency with a child by sexual contact," Dudley said.
A Harrison County grand jury has indicted Nichols on that charge and an additional charge of sexual assault of a child.
"On the additional indictment handed down by the Harrison County Grand Jury Mr. Nichols turned himself in on Thursday and is currently in custody in Harrison county," Dudley said.
The latest charges come just 4 months after a grand jury indicted Eddie Nichols on two counts of sexual indecency with a child by contact. That happened in October. Eddie Nichols and his wife Sharon Nichols were both indicted on those charges. In this case, investigators say Sharon Nichols is not involved.
The Harrison County District Attorney's office is now handling the investigation.
If convicted, Nichols could face up to 20 years in prison for each of his four child sex charges.
Tonight Eddie Nichols is in the Harrison County jail on $100,000 bond for each of his two new charges.
