Revamped Physical Training Readies Troops for Battle

Posted: Updated:

The way soldiers train at home has made an about face over the past two years.

That's especially true at Fort Hood, and it's making our service members stronger in more than one way.

Rain or shine, Fort Hood soldiers report for physical training (PT) every morning at 6:30 sharp, but what happens there is changing.

Over the past few years, PT has evolved into something called physical readiness training (PRT).

Former Drill Sgt. Taneisha Prewitt was there at the beginning.

"Now we're not just focusing on just doing the basic running, the basic pushups and sit ups. We're actually incorporating climbing drills, which enhances the endurance and muscular strength of the soldiers," says Prewitt.

From flipping tires to running with logs, it's training designed to save lives on the battlefield.

"You don't want to be injured and someone not be able to carry you from point A to point B. You want some soldiers who are able to run and get the mission done and get you out of harm's way as quick as possible," said Prewitt.

"You've got to count on each other. You work out together, you fight together," said PFC Darrin Batson after PT.

PRT also helps injured soldiers get their strength back, and helps prevent injuries.

So far, two soldiers in Prewitt's unit have overcome obesity, making the team stronger down range.

"When it comes to being in 120 degree heat and wearing a full battle load and being in an MRAP with no air conditioning, you've got to be in shape," Batson said.

The unit has seen results at home and overseas.

"We noticed how it increased them tremendously with their PT test, so it enhanced them tremendously there and here," said Prewitt.

She says even more new drills are likely down the road.
