BOLIVAR PENINSULA, TX (KTRK) -- A young child from Anahuac was killed when he was struck by a log in Crystal beach on Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened shortly after 3:30pm. According to the Galveston Co. Sheriff's Office, LaShaun Huff, 3, was walking along the beach near Monkhouse Road with family members when a driftwood log shifted and began rolling down a sand dune, say investigators. Police say that log, weighing several hundred pounds and measuring nearly 40 feet in length, rolled about four feet down the dune before striking Huff.
Sheriff's deputies and an EMS crew responded using four-wheel drive vehicles to push the log far enough for them to reach Huff. Despite efforts to revive the child, Huff was pronounced dead at the scene.
Huff's grandfather and a 15-year-old sibling were injured when they tried to keep the log from hitting Huff. The 15-year-old was taken to UTMB in Galveston for injuries that are said to be non life-threatening.
Sheriff's deputies believe the log was lying atop a beach dune line when the group walked by at the base of the dunes. Deputies believe the disturbance of the sand in front of and beneath the log may have caused it to shift, rolling seaward and striking Huff.
Huff's body is being taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
We have a crew heading to the scene and will bring you any new information as it becomes available.
