The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tells 12NewsNow.Com an Orange County deputy who was shot Thursday morning during a struggle with a juvenile is in stable condition

Deputy Fred Ashworth and a juvenile were returning from court to the Minnie Rogers Juvenile Justice Center around 10:30 a.m.  Thursday when the shooting happened.  The juvenile was being transferred through a sally port, which is the entry way into a secured facility designed to allow only one door to open. Officials say this is when the juvenile had a struggle with Ashworth and was able to get a gun.  The juvenile then shot Deputy Ashworth twice in the upper chest area.

Jailers were able to lock down the sally port, trapping the juvenile inside. Officers were then able to talk the juvenile into surrendering the deputies gun.

Authorities say the deputy was taken to a Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth by ambulance.

Sheriff Woods says the juvenile, 16, faces numerous possible offenses including attempted capital murder of a police officer.

Agencies assisting with the investigation include the Jefferson and Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Rangers.
