Teens raise money for diabetic toddler

Posted: Updated:

Taylor Smart and Paul Anders are best friends who share Type I Diabetes. When they learned 3-year-old Racer McLeod of Groves also shares the disease, the boys administered a dose of 5th grade philanthropy.

"We're selling t-shirts to try to raise enough money to get this dog for him," said Paul Anders when describing to 12 News HD why he's taken it upon himself to raise money for Racer.

"We're 10 and he's only 3. We know what it's like to have diabetes but he don't," said Taylor Smart when describing why it was important for Racer to get his guardian angel service dog to treat his diabetes.

Paul and Taylor are helping Racer, a boy they've never even met, raise money for a guardian angel service dog. Racer's parents thought they had Racer's diabetes under control until he had his first seizure in November. The cost is nearly $19,000 and the McLeod's need help paying for it so they don't have to pay a note over a two year time span.

Ryan McLeod, Racer's father, posted a YouTube video titled "Racers Guardian Angel". The video has over 5,500 views. Taylor and Paul are just one of the views and they decided to help after watching.

Taylor and Paul are making an impact at their school where both administrators and classmates said the boys are an inspiration.

"These boys know better than anybody what Racer's going through. They know better than any one what this family is experiencing right now, " said Kountze Intermediate nurse Tracy Tantillo.

Paul and Taylor will be at a fundraiser for Racer which is set up for February 11, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Precision Auto Body, 723 U.S. 69 in Nederland. The event includes a $5 link lunch, a silent auction, and a bake sale. The boys will be there to present Racer with a check with all the money they raised.

For more information on how to purchase a t-shirt, contact John Anders at (409) 782-7679 or email janders001@gt.rr.com. T-shirts are $20 and the proceeds will go towards Racer's guardian angel dog. The boys also have a Facebook fan page called "Type 1 Tacklers". The link is: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Type-1-Tacklers/211918665566820?ref=ts&sk=wall

For information on the fundraiser event itself contact Ryan McLeod at (409) 728-6810. Ryan told 12 News HD that there are many ways to help from liking their Facebook fan page called "Racer's Diabeticalertdog" at: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003253790539&sk=info, attending the event, or even donating resources, time, or money.
