Living Healthy: Varicose Veins

Millions of Americans are affected by varicose veins, but you may not know there's a safe, quick, and effective way to take care of the problem.

In this week's Living Healthy report, we look at how you can have the procedure done right here in southeast Texas.

Terri Barnhart is a nurse.

She spends hours on her fee and those hours have taken a toll on her legs..

Seeking some relief, Barnhart went to see Dr. Charles Gutierrez at The Vein Center of Texas, in Beaumont.

Dr. Gutierrez is performing a new high-tech procedure.

Severe varicose veins afflict some 25-30 million americans, but this new technology is solving the problem in just minutes.

They call it "microwave on a stick."

Its a procedure in which radiofrequency heats and seals the primary leg vein in about two minutes.

The procedure is much easier on the patient than the vein stripping of the past.

In fact,  the whole procedure lasts under a half hour and many people return to work the same day.

And the procedure won't break the budget, because it's considered a medical condition and not cosmetic surgery, so it's covered by medicare and health insurance.

The majority of patients suffering with severe varicose veins are over the age of 50 and two-thirds of them are women.

Vein Centers of Texas: Beaumont is located at #7 Bayoubrandt Drive, behind Hobby Lobby Shopping Center.
