The City of Lumberton, which has an annual budget of roughly $3 million, is set to pay out $1 million after losing an eminent domain lawsuit.
That suit involves about 115 acres of property taken from landowner William Hooks for a detention pond to prevent flooding.
Hooks sued and was awarded about $9 thousand per acre and nearly a $150 thousand in interest and attorney's fees.
Lumberton City Manager Don Burnett told 12 News HD that the city is appealing the case.
Burnett says it is a totally unfair amount and that several issues that should have been included in the case were not allowed into evidence.
