Lamar QB Carson Erp named SLC Player of Week

Earp Named Southland Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University senior quarterback Carson Earp has been named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his part in the Cardinals thrilling last second victory over Northwestern State Saturday in Beaumont.

“The last three weeks Carson has played really well,” said LU head coach Ray Woodard. “That was tough on him the other night to have that much placed on his shoulders but he really played well. I think he is just getting started – he’s just going to continue to get better.”

Just a week after recording one of the most efficient performances in school history by completing nearly 85 percent of his passes against Abilene Christian, Earp came out Saturday and guided the Cardinals to a come-from-behind victory in the final seconds over Northwestern State – the program’s first win over the Demons since the 1989 season.

The Cardinals scored two touchdowns in less than two minutes, including the game-winner with six seconds on the clock for the victory. The win was Big Red’s third consecutive, which is the first time the Cardinals have won three straight in the same season since 1989.

Earp completed 29 passes for a career-high 412 yards and tied a career high with four touchdown passes. He also carried the ball six times for 63 yards. The 412 passing yards tied as the fourth-best single-game performance in program history, while his 475 yards of total offense was bested only by Caleb Berry’s 591-yard performance at Central Arkansas in 2014.

The Cardinals closed out both the first and second half with a late touchdowns. After scoring a total of three points in the first 29:48 of the contest, Earp found senior Michael Handy in the end zone for score with only 12 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
