FRISCO, Texas -- Lamar University junior guard Nick Garth has been named College Sports Madness Southland Conference Player of the Week announced publication officials Monday morning. Garth was recognized for his efforts in helping LU defeat Tulsa, 74-67, in the season opener Friday in Tulsa.
Garth helped the Cardinals jump out to an early double-digit lead, and hold off a late charge from the Golden Hurricane for the victory. The Cardinals led for all but 33 seconds in the contest, as Tulsa could manage just two one-point leads.
Garth just missed a career high with 23 points which included five three-point field goals. Garth also finished the day with a career-high eight rebounds, an assist and a steal.
It was the ninth time in Garth’s career that he scored at least 20 points in a game. Garth moved to fourth on the school’s all-time three-point list after knocking down five three-pointers against the Golden Hurricane.
Big Red returns to action Tuesday to open a four-game homestand. The first game of the homestand will be against Coastal Carolina, which will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center. It will be the first meeting in program history between the two schools, but the first of two this season as LU will repay the visit next month.
The rest of the Cardinals’ homestand will consist of Jarvis Christian (Nov. 16), Cal State Bakersfield (Nov. 19) and Southern University of New Orleans (Nov. 22).
