Dabney Named Southland Player of the Week
FRISCO, Texas -- Lamar University junior defensive back Brandon Dabney has been named Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week announced league officials Monday morning. It is the first time his career that Dabney has received the honor.
Dabney played a key role in the Cardinals’ victory over Houston Baptist Saturday at Husky Stadium in Houston, Texas. The Cardinals found themselves having to dig their way out of an early 13-0 deficit. Trailing by seven points with less than 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, LU stopped Houston Baptist forcing the Huskies to punt from their own 30-yard line. Dabney broke through the line and blocked Christian Guzman’s punt which was recovered by Desmond Veals in the end zone to tie the game. The play changed the momentum of the game as the Cardinals would tack on another score for the victory.
Dabney’s block was one of two for the Cardinals Saturday as Big Red put an end to a seven-game skid. The Cardinals two blocks resulted in nine points as the Red and White blocked a point after try in the first quarter which was recovered and returned for two points.
The Cardinals are now 2-8 (.200) on the season and 1-7 (.125) in Southland Conference play as they prepare for the annual rivalry game with McNeese. The Cowboys come to Lake Charles, La., ranked 19th nationally and still fighting for a spot in the NCAA FCS Playoffs.
Saturday’s game has been moved to a 7 p.m. kick to accommodate the Eleven Sports Broadcast. It can also be heard live on Newstalk 560 KLVI.
