UPDATE: Beaumont police get warrants for man who fired shots at officers

A Beaumont Police Department spokesperson Monday said that officers have obtained warrants for a man who robbed a convenience store and later exchanged gunfire with police as they tried to arrest him.

Monday afternoon detectives obtained two arrest warrants for Mitchell James Clay, 35, of Beaumont.  Police say he is the man responsible for the armed robbery of Sunshine Market and for subsequently firing shots at an officer who attempted to detain him.

Jefferson County Precinct 1 Place 1 Justice of the Peace Judge Kenneth Dollinger issued an arrest warrant for aggravated robbery with a $75,000 bond and an arrest warrant for aggravated assault on a public servant with a $125,000 bond.

Clay was admitted to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth Hospital after he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound.  He may require follow-up surgeries and will remain in custody at the hospital until his discharge.
