Two Jefferson County Democrats to switch to Republican Party

A prominent Jefferson County political source has confirmed to 12News that Jefferson County Commissioner Brent Weaver and Jefferson County Precinct 7 Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett will hold a press conference Friday to announce their affiliation with the Republican Party.

It's considered a major switch by political insiders, reflecting a stronger GOP presence in county leadership.

Burnett confirmed with 12News that a press conference was set for 1 p.m. Friday, but would not comment on what would be discussed. Weaver did not immediately return phone calls for comment.

Weaver is nearing the end of first term as commissioner, elected in 2010 and is up for reelection in 2014.

Burnett is now in his third term of office and was last challenged by a Republican in 2010.

Tax Assessor Shane Howard and County Treasurer Tim Funchess are the only two Republicans to hold county-wide office since reconstruction.

Texas Republican Party Chairman Steve Munisteri will be at the Pompano Club in Nederland at 1 p.m. Friday for the announcement. Insiders tell us there may also be another surprise.
