Truck driver jumps from 18-wheeler moments before collision with train

Jasper County emergency responders were called to an accident involving a train and an 18-wheeler Monday afternoon.

A dispatcher received the call around 3:22 p.m.

The accident happened on Recreational Road 255 East at the railroad tracks.

According to Trooper Stephanie Davis, the train, operated by Timberrock Railroad Company, was crossing Recreational Road 255 when it was struck by an 18-wheeler.  

The truck driver, identified as Markeim Reliford, of Call, said he was going westbound on Recreational Road 255 when his brakes failed. He said he jumped out of the 2005 Peterbuilt  before it struck the train.

Reliford was taken by ambulance to Jasper Memorial hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Trooper Davis said no other information was available as of 5 p.m.
