Beaumont ISD is bidding farewell to its Superintendent of 16 years, Dr. Carroll Thomas.
During public comment at Thursday's board meeting, the last for Thomas, he received praise leading up to his retirement at the end of August. He also received criticism.
At one point Dr. Thomas received a standing applause from people in the board room. It came after a man spoke of meeting Dr. Thomas 16 years ago. The man said he disagreed with Thomas' goals as a young superintendent but 16 years later he said he was proud of Dr. Thomas.
Several others went to the podium and simply thanked Dr. Thomas for his work. One woman said Thursday night was about him and his love and passion for students.
There were people who spoke about their unhappiness with Dr. Thomas' work as a superintendent. They all relatively shared the same idea, telling Dr. Thomas that he failed students and tax payers.
One added that they hope Superintendent Elect Dr. Timothy Chargois will get a broom and take the trash out.
Dr. Thomas didn't say much during the public comments, only showing a smile when people thanked him for his 16 years.
Trustees also voted unanimously to pass a tax decrease for the upcoming school year.
Also passed was the budget for the upcoming school year. That passed by a 5-2 vote.
