Texas Rangers investigating accusations made against Newton County Sheriff

An attorney for Newton County Sheriff Eddie Shannon has confirmed to 12News that investigators with the Texas Rangers are looking into allegations made against the sheriff.

Sheriff Shannon is accused of making a terroristic threat against the county judge and commissioners.

Newton County District Attorney Courtney Tracy told 12News she is the one who contacted the Texas Rangers after receiving the complaint.  She said she then immediately recused herself because the Sheriff is a fellow elected county official.

Tyler County Assistant District Attorney Lou Ann Cloy has been appointed as special prosecutor while Trinity County Judge Joe Ned Dean will be overseeing the case.

Shannon's attorney Blair Bisbey denies the allegation, calling it absurd. Bisbey said the Sheriff's former secretary made the accusation.

Texas Ranger Joe Haralson would not comment, but Bisbey told us the sheriff is cooperating and he expects the investigation to be complete in a week or two.

Bisbey said his client has no idea why the secretary would make the accusation.

Shannon has been sheriff since 2012.
