Texas first state to formally ask Washington to secede

Texas has become the first state to reach the 25,000 petition signatures necessary to formally ask Washington for its independence. Since the November election, 19 other states have joined Texas in petitioning the government to secede.

The Texas Nationalist Movement, which advocates state sovereignty, saw a 400% spike in enrollment following Election Day.  Its web traffic is up 9,000%.

Hardin County conservative blogger Peter Morrison has advocated an "amicable divorce" from the United States.

Monday, 12 News asked Morrison why he has embraced secession. Morrison sent 12 News the following statement.

"People living in a free society should have control over their own destiny. When citizens of Czechoslovakia decided to peacefully separate into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, it was not a case of a sore loser, but rather two free people groups deciding they wanted to govern themselves independently."
