Surveillance video shows convenience store clerk being shot, beaten

Video showing a brutal beating following a gunshot to the stomach is shedding light on what happened during an armed robbery at a Beaumont convenience store.

The robbery happened at the Sunshine gas station at the corner of Concord Road and Pope Avenue around 11am last Friday.

Surveillance video released Tuesday by Beaumont police shows a man wearing a camouflage hooded sweatshirt and a baseball cap walking into the store, then pulling out a rifle and pointing it at the clerk. They exchange words, then the gunman fires one round into the clerk's abdomen, causing him to fall the floor. The clerk quickly gets to his feet and leads the shooter to the register.

Handing the gunman cash, the clerk clutches at his wound, then makes a rash decision. He tries to grab the gun, and the situation gets worse. The robber drops the rifle but starts swinging wildly, punching the clerk in head.

The gunman is seen putting the clerk in a headlock and continuing to punch him as they move across the room.

At one point the robber appears to be reaching for something in his back pocket, but shortly after that the video ends.
Police say the gunman ran out of the store with money in hand and ran northbound towards a nearby car wash. One witness said he saw the clerk chase after the gunman a short while then give up.
A coworker tell us the clerk is Kamar Ali, 39, who the coworker says is out of the hospital and is doing ok.

Police say the robber is still at large, and is described as a six-foot tall black man with a thin build and braided hair.

Police are offering up to a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to his arrest.
