Student's mother says indicted teacher did not act in self-defense

On Wednesday, the mother of a Port Arthur boy who accuses his teacher of assaulting him released photos of his injuries.

Melissa Taylor says the photos show the bruises and scratches inflicted on her son by Lee Elementary teacher Ruby Gunner.

The injuries are on the boy's face, neck and back.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted the 62-year-old Gunner on a charge of injury to a child.

In an exclusive interview with 12News, Gunner says she acted in self-defense claiming the boy kicked her in the stomach and pushed her first.

Taylor issued the following statement to 12News, "This was not self-defense.  She went into another class and assaulted my son."

On Thursday, the school board will vote on recommendation by the superintendent to suspend Gunner without pay.

Taylor says she will be at the meeting, so will members of the Port Arthur Teachers Association who plan to show their support for Gunner, who's been teaching for 40 years.
