Southeast Texans get head start on tax-free savings

Ready, set, save!

Southeast Texans are joining millions across the state taking advantage of not having to pay sales taxes on select back to school items.

The annual Texas Sales Tax-Free Weekend began Friday and runs through Sunday, August 10.

Shoppers will save about $8 for every $100 they spend on clothes, school supplies, and footwear.

"This is our second biggest selling season, only next to Christmas. Tax-free selling season is like Christmas in August," said Lon Hawkins, store manager at JC Penney in Parkdale Mall.

"School's almost here, we're trying to take advantage, save a little money. When you got 3 kids you try to save everything you can," shopper John Moore told 12News Friday.

Tax-free weekend also applies to purchases made online.
