Small businesses put family first on Thanksgiving

For five years Posh Baby Company has been a money maker for Erika Novak.

The small retail business has what Novak calls a unique selection of items for children and adults.

"We offer lines you can only find in Houston so it keeps the market in Beaumont rather than driving to H-town," Novak said.

Last year was the first time Novak did something special for black Friday by opening an hour early.

This year will be the same. The 28-year-old has her mind made up for Thanksgiving Day.

"We're closed! spend time with family," she said.

That gives Posh Baby Company employee Jessica Shoemaker another reason to be thankful this holiday.

"I love that, I want to spend Thanksgiving with family at the deer lease like we do every year so I'm thankful we're off," Shoemaker said.

Big retail stores have always drawn droves of customers on black Friday.
To stay ahead of the competition, retail giants like Target and Wal-Mart will be open four hours before the clock hits midnight on Thanksgiving.

That's no concern to Posh Baby Company.

Mercado de Familia grocery store in Beaumont is opening on Thanksgiving but closing by one P.M.

The manager of Abraham's in Beaumont tells 12 News HD the owner is still considering opening on Thanksgiving.

The decision is made for posh baby company and Novak is still expecting a good black Friday even if there won't be lines outside her store the night before.

"All that stuff is normally done by 10 a.m. at the mall and all that so shoppers will drive around to see what's open and come here," Novak said.
