Ruby Gunner denied contract renewal, plans to sue Port Arthur I.S.D.

The Port Arthur Independent School District school board voted unanimously Wednesday not to renew Ruby Gunner's contract with the district . Now the veteran teacher plans to sue the school district.

The school board's decision came after hearing arguments from Gunner's attorney and PAISD attorney Melody Chappell. Gunner was acquitted of criminal charges in March but Chappell said the trial has nothing to do with the district's policies and procedures.

An 11-year-old Lee Elementary School student accused Gunner of attacking him last year. Gunner said it was in self defense and her attorney argued Wednesday that the district has no clear policy on self defense.

"Our job is to take care of our children. You can not show and teach children how to lie. Regardless of what the cost is," Gunner said after the decision came down.

Chappell said that because Gunner is not technically being terminated and she can still receive the retirement benefits. The Superintendent now must formally notify Gunner in writing that her contract will not be renewed.
