The L.L. Melton Family Life Center has not been a YMCA for years, but it continues to operate and does so with help from the City of Beaumont. But now a Southeast Texas psychologist is approaching the city about offering occupational, physical and speech therapy at the facility.
She also wants to provide educational programs for students with disabilities.
Dr. Donna Farrell sent a letter to Beaumont's community development director saying she wants the Melton to be an education community center. She wants to upgrade the facility if she can reach a minimum 20-year lease agreement with the city.
A time line of when the project could be complete is unclear. Dr. Farrell and city employees did not return phone calls to answer questions on costs of the project or who would pay for it.
There will be a workshop Tuesday at Beaumont's City Council meeting to discuss the project.
