Port Arthur police continue to investigate abuse of one-month-old

A spokesperson for the Department of Family Protective Services told 12News Tuesday that a one-month-old girl who is the subject of a child abuse investigation has suffered at least 19 fractures.

Spokesperson Shari Pulliam said the baby is in guarded condition.

The investigation began after an officer was called to Christus Hospital St. Mary in Port Arthur just after 12 a.m. Saturday.  The child was brought to the hospital with what a police spokesperson said were injuries indicative to abuse.

A news release issued by the Port Arthur Police Department says the officer received information on possible suspects and called for detectives from the Major Crimes Unit

The news release says due to the child's life-threatening injuries, she was flown to Texas Children's Hospital.

Family Protective Services took emergency custody of the baby. Injuries to the child include multiple fractures, broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder and a brain bleed. An investigator said some of the injuries were old injuries, leading investigators to believe the baby has been abused since it's birth a month ago.

No charges have been filed as of Tuesday morning.
