Police search for accused robbers who held up Lamar student at gunpoint

Lamar University police are looking for three men who robbed an international student early Wednesday morning.

Officers were called to the 600 block of Adams Street just after midnight.  A man told police he had just been robbed by three men.  He said at least one of them had a handgun.  The robbers were wearing basketball shorts and t-shirts.

An officer searching the area spotted three.  They fled when they saw officers approaching and were able to elude police.

The Beaumont Police Department was contacted to assist and a K-9 was brought to the scene.  The dog tracked the suspects for a time but then lost the track.

Officers then tracked the victim's cell phone to 4212 Grandberry Street, in Beaumont.  The cell phone was recovered and a suspect, Jerry Paul Fontenot, 17, of Beaumont, was detained.

Police were unable to link Fontenot to the robbery, but he acknowledged receiving the stolen property.  He was placed under arrest for Theft class B.

Fontenot was taken to the Jefferson County Jail.

A police spokesperson said further investigation revealed that the handgun used in the robbery was a compressed air pistol.

Persons of interest have been identified and the Lamar Police Department is pursuing leads.
