Nike launches Pro Hijab to make sports more inclusive for women

In an upcoming line of workout clothes for women, Nike is introducing a performance hijab to better serve Muslim female athletes — the Nike Pro Hijab, which is scheduled for release next year.

Zahra Lari, the United Arab Emirates’ first international figure skater, said on Instagram she is “super excited” to be involved in Nike’s campaign and is already wearing the hijab on the ice.

The Pro Hijab is made from a single layer of thin polyester — in both dark and neutral colors — and includes tiny holes to make it breathable, according to CNN. Additionally, it is longer in back so it doesn’t become untucked during competition, Vogue Arabia reported.

Lari also shared her thoughts on Nike’s new apparel with Vogue Arabia, explaining she wants people to know that “Emirati athletes are strong” and “confident women.”

“People may think or tell you that you can’t do certain things, but I’m going to show them you absolutely can. I am covered, I am Muslim, I am from a desert country, and I’m doing a winter sport.”

The company developed the Nike Pro Hijab following complaints from some Muslim athletes about wearing a traditional head cover while competing, CNN reported.
