Nederland police arrest suspect they say set man on fire

A spokesperson for the Nederland Police Department said Friday that a man has been arrested following a Dec. 28 incident in which a man was doused with gasoline and set on fire.

Officers arrested Micah Distefano, 27, of Nederland on a warrant signed by Justice of the Peace Marc DeRouen.  Distefano is charged with aggravated assault with serious bodily injury.

According to Chief Darrell Bush, Zachary Bailey, 29, of Groves, had gasoline thrown on him and then ignited.  Bailey suffered 3rd degree burns over 67 percent of his body.  He is currently undergoing treatment at UTMB in Galveston.

Distefano is currently held at the Jefferson County Jail on $125,000 bond. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

"20 years is not enough... I almost lost my grandson, he came very close to not making it," Bailey's grandmother Pat Miller told 12News Friday.

Miller says her grandson has no insurance. A benefit to help raise money to cover his medical costs is scheduled for March 16 at the American Legion Unit 7 in Port Arthur.
