Name of victim in Kountze fatal accident released

Officials have given approval to release the identify of a person who died in an accident Monday.  The deceased is identified as Gregory Brock Collins, 20.

Around 10:45 a.m. Monday, Kountze police were called to the 300 block of South Pine Street.  A caller told the dispatcher that a truck struck a utility pole.

When officers arrived they found a utility pole lying in the road blocking northbound traffic. Wires from the pole were touching the driver-side door of a dump truck driven by Chad Mitchell, 47, of Silsbee.  Mitchell was able to get out of the truck without injuries.

The truck that struck the utility pole is a maroon 1994 extended cab Chevy pickup that was driven by Melvin Redmon, 19, of Lumberton. Redmon was severely injured and was taken by Acadian Ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont.

Collins was a passenger in Redmon's truck.  When officers arrived he was trapped inside the truck.  Emergency workers were able to free him from the wreckage and he was taken by ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.  He died in the emergency room.

The accident remains under investigation.
