The Beaumont chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People announced Tuesday plans for a rally to support Beaumont Independent School District's communications director who was placed on paid administrative leave Monday.
Organizers are calling the rally "Justice for Ms. Jessie Haynes." Haynes became involved in a dispute with a reporter and a BISD trustee after Haynes blocked access to a press briefing being given to other reporters by the district's legal counsel.
Haynes was subsequently placed on administrative leave by the district.
The NAACP says it will hold a rally at the BISD administrative office on Thursday at 5 p.m. in support of Haynes.
In a press release, the NAACP wrote "...no human should be subjected the kind of treatment that Ms. Haynes received on Thursday, August 1, 2013, while performing her job at the Beaumont Independent School District. She was Bullied, Verbally Attacked, Man-Handled and Assaulted by three men." They added "Haynes is a grandmother, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and consummate advocate for the well-being of children and this community. These bullying and assault attacks on women who work at BISD must stop NOW!"
