Mosquitoes in Jefferson County test positive for West Nile Virus

Jefferson County has its first reported case of West Nile in mosquitoes for 2014.

Jefferson County Mosquito director Kevin Sexton told 12News that confirmation was received late Wednesday. The mosquitoes that were tested were collected in the area of south 11th Street and Corley Ave. in Beaumont on August 19.

As a precaution the area was sprayed via air and ground Wednesday night and will continue Thursday.

Earlier this month, Southeast Texas had a positive test for St. Louis encephalitis. The viruses are similar in that they transmitted by infected mosquitoes.Symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and tiredness. The young, elderly and people with compromised immune systems are more at risk of contracting the virus.
