Man runs across the country to raise mental health awareness

12News met up with Chad Sigmon of Land O'Lakes, Florida in Mauriceville Saturday morning, 867 miles into his 2,650 mile cross country run.

Sigmon is running across the United States to raise awareness about mental health. He has suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder since he was a teenager.

His incredible journey began on April 1 in Jacksonville, Florida. He plans to run all the way to San Diego, California, with breaks, of course.

He has been averaging 20 miles a day, and crossed into Texas Thursday night.

"I just met a person today that thanked me for running... (a person) who suffered from bipolar disorder," Sigmon told 12News.

"It's awesome, it's great that people are able to open up and talk about. I think knowledge is key and the more people talk about it, the more informed people are going to be."

Sigmon's route through Southeast Texas includes Mauriceville, Beaumont, and China. Concerned for his safety, Sigmon's father is using an RV to accompany his son on the adventure.
