Man killed in Eastex Freeway accident identified as Lumberton man

A Beaumont Police Department spokesperson has identified a man killed in an accident on Eastex Freeway Wednesday night as Jason Scott Wilcox, 30, of Lumberton.

Beaumont Police Sgt. Rob Flores said the accident happened around 8:15 p.m.,

Wilcox was driving a 1992 Honda Accord when he entered Hwy 69 North heading southbound in the northbound lane.  Wilcox entered the freeway going the wrong way at the Tram Road exit ramp.  Shortly after getting onto the freeway, Wilcox sideswiped a 2005 Dodge pickup and continued to drive southbound in the northbound lane.  He then collided head-on with a 2003 Ford pickup on Eastex Freeway over the LNVA canal.  Wilcox sustained fatal injuries during that second crash.

The driver and two passengers of the Dodge pickup were not injured and the driver of the Ford pickup sustained minor injuries.  He was treated and released at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.

Traffic backed up just south of the second crash site and that resulted in another minor accident between four vehicles.  No one in that crash was seriously injured.

Traffic Unit Investigators are working to determine what caused Wilcox to enter the freeway going the wrong direction.

Sgt. Flores said preliminary autopsy results may reveal facts that led to the cause of the accident.
