A jury Thursday morning reached a guilty verdict in the cold-case murder trial of Duane Lee Washington. Washington was then handed down a life sentence for the 2003 killing 93-year-old Ernest Jackson.
Police say on December 26, 2003, a neighbor went to check on Jackson and found he had been shot and was not breathing. According to police, Jackson's daughter had visited him at his home the day before (Christmas Day) and that he was doing well.
Washington was arrested nine years later at a Salvation Army in downtown Houston by Beaumont Street Crimes officers, the Jefferson County Warrant Division officers and US Marshals. He was arraigned and taken to the Beaumont Police Department to speak with detectives.
Washington chose not to testify in his own defense fearing his past criminal record would be brought up.
