LU softball starts play Sept. 22
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University softball team plays its first game in more than 20 years when it hosts Texas Woman's University in a Sept. 22 doubleheader at Ford Park.
"I'm looking forward to actually coach a game," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "I've spent so much time working on the field, building a roster and building a schedule. Now I want to just be on the field during a game."
The twinbill is part of an eight-game fall schedule for the Lady Cardinals, who will play a full schedule in the spring as members of the Southland Conference.
"The fall season is huge for us," Bruder said. "It's instrumental in developing and evaluating incoming players. Since all of our players are new, it's even more important this year."
Lamar's other home games this fall are against Northwood University on Sept. 28 and Galveston College on Oct. 20. The Lady Cardinals will play three games at the LSU Tournament and a single game at Louisiana-Lafayette.
"I think the fall schedule is a good mix," Bruder said. "We have teams that range from junior college to the top 25 in Division I. It will give us a good opportunity to see where we are."
The fall slate closes with an intrasquad scrimmage on Oct. 27.
The team's first practice is scheduled for p.m. Sept. 4 at Ford Park. An open tryout for interested Lamar student-athletes is set for 4 p.m. Sept. 6 at Ford Park.
There is no admission charge for Lamar's home games this fall.
